A Great Nephite commander. He created the Title of liberty, fortified the Nephite cities, defeated the armies of Zerahemna, stopped the treachery of the King-men, rescued the Nephite prisoners without bloodshed, and invented many new military strategies.
He led other great captains such as Teancum, Helaman and Lehi with whom he had a dear friendship (Alma 53:2). He retired about 60 B.C. and turned over the roll of chief captain to his son Moronihah. He passed away in 56 B.C.
Mormon wrote this stunning praise for Chief Captain Moroni: "Yea, verily, verily I say unto you, if all men had been, and were, and ever would be, like unto Moroni, behold the very powers of hell would have been shaken forever; yea, the devil would never have power over the hearts of the children of men." - Alma 48:17
